I'm averaging dates in Excel and getting a number I don't understand. Why?

Excel stores dates as sequential serial numbers. When you average dates, you're averaging these serial numbers. The result is also a serial number, which Excel displays as a date. To understand the result, change the cell format to 'General' or 'Number' to see the underlying serial number.
