What accounted for lack of progress in the sciences during the Middle Ages

The lack of education and high death rates accounted for a large portion of the scientific reduction in advances. Basically saying, people weren’t educated and they died at young ages, also the Catholic Church had a large hold on the culture of society during the Middle Ages and controlled any scientific developments that went against Church teachings.
