While not a direct cause, excessive disk fragmentation can contribute to disk errors. Fragmented files are scattered across the disk, increasing the read/write head's travel time and potentially stressing the drive. Defragmenting the drive (for HDDs, not SSDs) can sometimes improve performance and reduce the likelihood of errors.
