The airbag control module (also known as the SRS control unit) is the central 'brain' of the VW Beetle's Supplemental Restraint System. It constantly monitors data from various sensors (impact sensors, seatbelt sensors, seat occupancy sensors). In a crash, it decides which airbags and seatbelt pretensioners to deploy. If the module itself fails, detects a fault in any system component, or registers a permanent error, it will illuminate the airbag error light to alert the driver.
